MW’s Morrigan
D.Q. Williams Kennel and trainer Craig Edwards brought `the heat` from Naples-Fort Myers, Florida in the form of MW’s Morrigan to earn the Greyhound of the Week honors. After winning the sprint championship at Naples-Fort Myers, the 68-pound brindle female bred from Coldwater Torres and MW’s Star Towind has taken the Texas Gulf Coast by storm.

MW’s Morrigan made an immediate splash on the same day as the Preakness Stakes, May 19 with a come from behind victory in her grade A debut. On her next scheduled start on May 24, the potential match-up of MW’s Morrigan and the Gulf’s 2012 win leader, Johnny Guitar of Big Water Kennel did not materialize on this night due to the scratch of Johnny Guitar. Starting from the middle #5 post, MW’s Morrigan took quick command of the race claiming a one-length advantage around the first turn, which was easily extended to a final winning margin of four lengths in a time of 30.06 seconds.
On Memorial Day, Monday May 28, MW’s Morrigan experienced her only setback at Gulf Greyhound Park as her bid for three in a row was eliminated with a slight bump in the first turn but still performed gamely to finish third. MW’s Morrigan quickly made amends on her next opportunity with the next start on Saturday evening June 2. Jumping quickly from an unfavorable #6 post position, MW’s Morrigan slashed down to her preferred rail running position just in front of kennelmate Nelly Nell. Once in the clear, MW’s Morrigan ran away from the competition by seven lengths in a speedy time of 30.04 seconds.

On Thursday evening June 7, the fans were convinced that MW’s Morrigan was `the real deal` making her the 9/5 betting favorite against a very difficult top grade AA field. Once more, MW’s Morrigan flashed her skills winning the race to the first turn and taking command of the race. With a two-length advantage heading into the backstretch, MW’s Morrigan said sayonara to her rivals on the way to a five-length victory and the fastest performance on the Gulf Greyhound Park racing oval so far with a 29.89 second effort.

Heading into Wednesday afternoon’s featured grade AA tenth race, the tension in the air equaled the level of humidity in the air on a typical summer day on the Texas Gulf Coast. Two of Gulf Greyhound Park’s top sprinters were positioned side-by-side and prepared to go to battle. Would her rail running style be hindered from beginning on the outside of the 550-yard starting box in post position #8? Kells Wild Bill of Libby Racing Kennels had been the hottest greyhound around winning 12 races over a three-month period from March through May. Would the `lucky stripes` of the #7 blanket help Kells Wild Bill get back on track after a two race winless streak? MW’s Morrigan flashed her box speed once again and caught an opening around the first turn obtaining her preferred rail running position in second place behind D.Q. Williams’s kennelmate Fuzzy Bingo while Kells Wild Bill raced closely behind just one length back. Kells Wild Bill accelerated down the backstretch splitting the D.Q. Williams duo and put his nose in front around the far turn. MW’s Morrigan fought back gallantly at the top of the stretch to re-gain the advantage saying `not this time Mr. Bill` and drawing off to a two-length victory in a time of 30.82 seconds over a wet racing surface.
